Alaska 2012

~Walking into Jumbo Ice Cave~

Kennicott~The old mining town sits between the base
of Bonanza Ridge and the Kennicott Glacier.

flying over glaciers, a flowing river of ice!

Erie Bunkhouse~Perched on the side of the cliff.
This is one of the bunkhouses where the miners actually lived
during the mining hay day in the early 1900's. What a commute to work!

Black Bear~Taking a break from eating soapberries to check us out!

Hope, Alaska~my first, real, true love.
Aaaaaah.....summer in Alaska, it's like a breath of fresh air. Sometimes that breath may be salted with mosquitos, sometimes seasoned with fresh berries! Where else in the world would you be invited to an "erection ceremony"? Thor and Rhianne's cabin walls were erected in July while I was visiting Hope before the voyage to McCarthy.

Bianca cutting up fresh fruit for Neve, Wren and all the erect workers!

Joy, Shelley and I~Loving Life & Loving Friends!

A Berry Happy Day! With Lucia and Shelley in Hope in the fall!

Enjoying the scenery in the rearview mirror on the eight hour drive to McCarthy!

Getting close now, just 33 more miles of paved road, then the remaining 60 miles is dirt road...which accounts for about 3 hours of the drive!

WELCOME TO McCARTHY!

Where we appreciate the simple life. And are able to entertain ourselves,
completely.

Mama Amber and Baby Riley about to hop out the "backdoor"
Inside Jumbo Ice Cave~looking up at the daylight streaming in through the entry/exit of the cave.

Baby Riley & I...all dressed up with so many places to go!

Dipnetting takes a lot of strength. Holding tightly onto the pole while
the current drags the net downstream...
waiting patiently until you feel a
BIG, FAT Copper River Red Salmon
swim into the net...
blistered hands and sore wrists are all worth it
a day later...

Enjoying the salmon on the grill the next day!
Ryan at Bonanza Mine

home for the night.

Bear Scat...can you guess what this bear had for breakfast?!

Girl Trip~flying with Duke
(technically a boy, but he's been fixed, so we allowed him on our girls day!),
Gaia and Stephanie to the coast for the day...
prepare for beauty below!

flying over lakes, glaciers, mountains,
icy bays and icy lakes,
and ice floating by.

 and bears strolling by ponds.

at last...the coast!

walking "bear foot" in the sand!!

Duke looking majestic as he waits for us to hop along the rocks.

Fallin in Love~with Minnesota~all over again!

Minnesota Fall~Winter 2012

watching the change from summer to fall...more summer than fall.

Mississippi and Me
What an incredible time of the year to be in Minnesota. The warm summer stretched all the way into September. Tomatoes ripe on the vine call my name and apples hang heavily on the tree, branches threatening to crack under all that weight. Suddenly, overnight, the leaves are changing and old-man-frost is knocking on our doors. The flowerbeds are covered with bedsheets, not sure if they are spooks preparing for Halloween or if people are simply trying to savor the beauty of the summer under there.
Layla and Alyssa~ apple-picking!

Alyssa & Jaymie making Christmas cookies!

Hazel "milking" Griffin!
